Metabolism of chlorinated naphthalenes.

چکیده
The compounds’ studied were naphthalene, 1-chloronaphthalene, and di-, tetra-, penta-, hepta-, and octachloronaphthalenes. The polychlorinated naphthalene samples were in every case within 2 per cent of the theoretical value with respect to chlorine content, although several isomeric forms were present in each sample. Male albino rabbits (approximately 2 kilos in weight) were kept on a standard diet of oats and cabbage during the course of the experiments. Complete 24 hour urine samples were collected daily for a 4 day period before the administration of the compounds. At the end of the control period, 1 gm. of naphthalene or a chlorinated naphthalene, dissolved or suspended in liquid petrolatum, was administered by stomach tube. Subsequent 24 hour urine samples were collected over a 4 day period. Each urine sample was diluted to a convenient volume with water and analyzed for the following excretory products: creatinine, glucosiduronic acids, phenolic compounds, sulfur pa&ions, and mercapturic acid. Creatinine was determined by a photometric modification of Folin’s picric acid method (3). Glucosiduronic acids were assayed by the procedure described by Hanson et al. (4). Phenolic compounds were determined with the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (5), with phenol as a standard. Equi-

Comparative toxicity of PCBs and related compounds in various species of animals.
There are several basic principles that apply to the clinicopathologic syndrome produced by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). They are as follows: The degree of halogenation and position of the halogen atoms determine the potency of PCB, PBB, CDD, CDF and CN; in a given species of animals, the clinicopathologic syndrome induced by PCB is comparable to that induced by polybrominated biphenyls (P...
متن کاملThe role of structure in the disposition of halogenated aromatic xenobiotics.
Halogenated aromatic xenobiotics such as the chlorinated and brominated biphenyls, naphthalenes, dibenzodioxins, and dibenzofurans are widespread environmental contaminants. The number, position, and nature of the halogen atoms as well as the structure of the aromatic rings influence the disposition of these chemicals in living systems. Absorption is governed primarily by the physical propertie...

3. The available literature for the two groups of compounds are summarised in this paper. In the case of the chlorinated paraffins, the available data were recently reviewed by the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as rapporteur of the risk assessments under the EU Existing Substances Regulation. Only papers published after these risk assessments in 1999 for short chain compounds and 2004 fo...
متن کاملRelative potencies of individual polychlorinated naphthalenes to induce dioxin-like responses in fish and mammalian in vitro bioassays.
A growing body of evidence suggests that polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) may be fairly widespread environmental contaminants. This may be cause for concern because exposure to PCNs has been linked to dioxin-like biological responses in a wide variety of species. This study used three in vitro bioassays to characterize the dioxin-like potency of 18 individual PCN congeners and 1 PCN metaboli...
متن کاملTissue distribution and elimination of selected chlorinated naphthalenes.
OBJECTIVES Polychlorinated naphthalenes are widespread, persistent environmental pollutants. Commercial products are generally mixtures of several congeners and range from thin liquids to hard waxes of high melting point. The higher chlorinated naphthalene products are used as impregnants for condensers and capacitors and dipping encapsulating compounds in electronics. The aim of this study was...
